The Shira Route is one of the less frequently used routes to Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit, known for starting at a higher elevation and offering spectacular views of the mountain’s western side. It’s a good option for climbers who are already acclimatized to altitude.
The drive from Moshi to the trailhead takes about 3 hours. From there, we begin our hike through the rainforest along a winding trail that ascends a ridge. The lower sections of the trail can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. We continue until we reach Shira Camp.

Starting from the Shira Plateau, we head east along a ridge, passing the junction leading to Kibo’s peak. Soon, our direction shifts southeast towards Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” After the tower, we reach another junction that leads up to Arrow Glacier (15,997 ft / 4,876 m). From here, we descend to Barranco Hut (12,664 ft / 3,860 m). Though we end the day at the same elevation as we began, this day is crucial for acclimatization, helping your body prepare for summit day.

After breakfast, we leave Barranco and tackle the steep ridge, passing the Barranco Wall before continuing to the Karanga Valley, where our campsite awaits.

We leave Barranco and ascend the steep Barranco Wall, then head through Karanga Valley, stopping for lunch at 14,770 ft / 4,200 m. We reach the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail and continue upward to Barafu Hut. At this point, we’ve completed the South Circuit, which offers panoramic views of the summit from various angles. We set up camp, rest, and prepare for the summit. Both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible from our camp.

Very early in the morning (between midnight and 2 a.m.), we head toward the summit, passing between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The ascent, mostly through scree, takes us toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This section of the trek is the most physically and mentally demanding. At Stella Point (18,652 ft / 4,200 m), we rest and are treated to an unforgettable sunrise. From here, we ascend for another hour through snow to reach the summit at Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and all of Africa. Afterward, we begin our descent, heading down to Mweka Hut, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The descent involves loose gravel, so gaiters and trekking poles are essential. Mweka Camp lies in the upper forest, where mist or rain is common in the late afternoon. We enjoy our final dinner on the mountain and rest.

After breakfast, we continue our descent to Mweka Park Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. As we descend to lower elevations, the trail can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles will assist. Light clothing such as shorts and a t-shirt should suffice, but keep rain gear and warm clothing nearby. From the gate, we continue for another hour to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Don’t forget to tip your guides and porters before celebrating your achievement!
