The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded paths on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering excellent acclimatization opportunities and diverse landscapes. It provides a balanced and gradual ascent, making it a top choice for climbers aiming for a successful summit.
Begin with a 4-hour drive from Arusha/Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration, followed by a 1-hour drive to the Lemosho trailhead. After lunch, trek through undisturbed rainforest to Forest Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp.
Ascend out of the rainforest into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock. Cross streams and ascend to Shira Ridge, before descending gently to Shira One Camp with stunning views of Kibo Peak.
Trek across the expansive Shira Plateau, enjoying views of Kibo. Camp at Shira Two near a stream or continue to Moir Hut at the base of Lent Hills for an excellent acclimatization opportunity with optional hikes.
Climb eastward to the Lava Tower (15,200 ft) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp (13,000 ft). This day involves significant altitude changes, aiding in preparation for summit night.
Begin with a steep climb up the Great Barranco Wall, passing through alpine desert. Descend into Karanga Valley and climb again to Karanga Camp, allowing for further acclimatization.
Ascend to Barafu Camp via the South Circuit, offering panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Begin the summit push at midnight, ascending to Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend rapidly to Barafu for a break, then continue to Mweka Camp for the night.
Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive summit certificates. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha.
