8 Days Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb – Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded paths on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering excellent acclimatization opportunities and diverse landscapes. It provides a balanced and gradual ascent, making it a top choice for climbers aiming for a successful summit.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp (Big Tree Camp)
  • Elevation: 7,800 ft to 9,500 ft
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Begin with a 4-hour drive from Arusha/Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration, followed by a 1-hour drive to the Lemosho trailhead. After lunch, trek through undisturbed rainforest to Forest Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp.

Ascend out of the rainforest into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock. Cross streams and ascend to Shira Ridge, before descending gently to Shira One Camp with stunning views of Kibo Peak.

  • Distance: 14 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Trek across the expansive Shira Plateau, enjoying views of Kibo. Camp at Shira Two near a stream or continue to Moir Hut at the base of Lent Hills for an excellent acclimatization opportunity with optional hikes.

  • Distance: 7 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-Desert

Climb eastward to the Lava Tower (15,200 ft) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp (13,000 ft). This day involves significant altitude changes, aiding in preparation for summit night.

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin with a steep climb up the Great Barranco Wall, passing through alpine desert. Descend into Karanga Valley and climb again to Karanga Camp, allowing for further acclimatization.

  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Ascend to Barafu Camp via the South Circuit, offering panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

  • Elevation: 15,300 ft to 19,345 ft (summit) and down to 10,000 ft
  • Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
  • Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
  • Habitat: Arctic

Begin the summit push at midnight, ascending to Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend rapidly to Barafu for a break, then continue to Mweka Camp for the night.

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive summit certificates. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha.
